Looking Ahead to Summer

The material will be used by teens to make quilts–one to keep and one to donate for each participant–at a special program once a week this summer. Companies making donations were: Fabri-Quilt, Free Spirit, Hoffman Fabrics, Northcott Silk Inc. and Lecien Fabrics.

Celebrate National Library Week April 11-17

McAlester Public Library is marking National Library Week April 11-17 with a variety of programs, contests and displays.

First sponsored in 1958 by the American Library Association (ALA), the week is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers in schools, campuses and communities nationwide.

“The theme for 2010 is ‘Communities thrive at your library,’ and that sentiment is certainly true here in McAlester,” Head Librarian Christine Sauro said.

“Libraries are the heart of every community and our library helps our community thrive. At our library, people of all backgrounds come together for community meetings, lectures and programs, to do research with the assistance of a trained professional, to get help finding a job or to find homework help.

“In addition, families and family events are important to us. We offer free movies with free popcorn, video gaming, play dates for infants and toddlers, Family Fun Nights, book clubs and classes in cooking, crafts and computers.”

Events and displays at the library, located at 401 N. 2nd, this week include:

*A 6 p.m. Monday screening of a film classic, starring Marlon Brando;

*Children and teens movie times at 4 p.m. Tuesday;

*Story Time for children at 10 a.m. Wednesday;

*A free crafts workshop for adults at 1 p.m. Wednesday;

*Book club discussion for teens at 4 p.m. Wednesday;

*An advanced computer class for adults at 4 p.m. Thursday;

*A movie screening for adults, in conjunction with the “Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma” program at 5:45 p.m. Thursday;

*Announcement of winners in two contests Friday afternoon. The library will award gift certificates in the “40 Days and 40 Nights” essay and short story contest, and 40 prizes will be awarded in the “40 Reasons to Love Your Library” contest; and

*Displays all week on library history and the year 1970, when the current library building was dedicated.

March to the Mailbox

STAFF MEMBERS at McAlester Public Library got in the spirit of things Friday, April 10 by wearing “March to the Mailbox” T-shirts and helping to distribute census forms. A special display at the front desk contains census forms in English and several other languages, for those who didn’t receive their forms in the mail.

‘Wee Love Reading’ Booth

WEE LOVE READING was the name of the McAlester Public Library booth at the annual Wee Care Baby Fair Saturday, April 3 at the Southeast Oklahoma Expo Center. Janice Saaranen and Darlene Rising assist fair-goers with picking up free items and registering for library cards. Over 1,500 people visited the library’s booth.

Fill Your Tow Sack With April Activities at the Library

By KATHY MCGILBERRY

We reckon we’ll not prank, prod, pinch or poke you for April Fools Day. No, instead we’ll own up to being just an old stick-in-the-mud, durned near a Bois D’Arc post in a bar ditch. We’d rather just plow a straight line toward all the library events that are sprouting up like poke salad in April. So grab yourself a tow sack and let’s get to picking! You won’t even have to boil anything twice to siphon off the pi-son.

(Translation from the original Okie: Although we’d love to join in April Fools Day revelry, our serious nature compels us to inform you of the many events scheduled this month at the library. Please friends, take hold of your metaphorical gunnysacks and fill them with plans to attend these mind-nourishing and not-at-all dangerous spring offerings.)

Displays this month include Christopher Elliot’s current Easter display near the front desk; a look back at the year 1970 (when the library opened in its current location) in the lobby; a shelf-of-the-week display from Nathan Forrest titled “Race,” that isn’t what you think it is; a staff picks display from yours truly, in which I look for laughs; and paranormal fiction in the teen section, courtesy of Sarah.

Look for a new display all about wild Oklahoma weather in the coming weeks, and another fascinating history display in the days ahead from local historian Steve Adams, as he traces the history of the library in McAlester. Even all this is not enough to keep up with your crack library staff: why not check the website (It’s our virtual branch!) frequently and follow Head Librarian Christine Sauro’s tweets on Twitter.com. Just search for “mcalester lib” and become a follower.
