Extraordinary, Excellent, Wonderful, Marvelous, Boffo? Nope, July Is Just SUPER @ Your Library

By KATHY McGILBERRY

There’s no other way to describe the Summer Reading Program at McAlester Public Library this year but SUPER. Participation in every event has been better than we could have hoped, and folks are having a SUPER time checking out lots of SUPER books and materials. In fact, we’ve even added a couple of SUPER new activities you won’t find on the calendar booklets we’ve been distributing like mad. So listen up! Here are the new activities.

We’ve added a Costume Creation Workshop for all ages on Tuesday, July 7. We have a few boxes of old costumes from holidays and Halloweens past, and we’re inviting you to come and take an item or two for your own finery. That event begins at 6 p.m. in the Whiteacre Room. We know you’ll want to create a costume/character for our Big Finish Costume Contest on Thursday, July 30 because the prizes are so terrific. You can see a few of those prizes in the display case in the lobby. Grand prizes include a Kindle Paperwhite for best adult costume, a three-month subscription to Hero Crate for best teen costume and a Nabi Tablet for best children’s costume.

Our teens and adult crafts groups have already been working on costume accessories in their regular sessions. You can participate as a Superhero character, a Steampunk character or any character of your own creation.

Also, our Media Moguls digital photo/graphic arts group has scheduled a free photo session for all ages at 6 p.m. Monday, July 27. They’ll set up a huge green screen and take photos of folks in their costumes. Free 5×7 prints will be available the following Thursday at the costume contest. I know our teens plan to get several shots of themselves “flying” using green screen technology. Great door prizes at this event will include two Superhero canvas photo transfers and a Spiderman photo transfer puzzle. Our thanks to Chelsye Deaton and Sam Hart for making and donating these super prizes.

Also added to the calendar is the Great Escape children’s book club. They will meet at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 20 to discuss the book The Poof Point by Ellen Weiss. The book was the basis of a Disney Channel original movie. Copies are still available, so stop by the library to get yours. (You might even get a free copy if you attend either of our Audience Participation Family Movies. Hint, hint.)

The annual Babysitting Workshop will be July 14, 15, 16 and 17 from 1-3 p.m. Register at the front desk. Anyone age 12 and older can become a certified babysitter by attending all four days.

Now here’s the rundown of all our SUPERHERO SUMMER activities remaining:

*Today (Wednesday, July 1)—Giant Puppets from puppeteer JoAnn McMillan at two shows, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Lunch Bunch at noon.

*Thursday, July 2—Story/Activity Time on this and every Thursday for ages 6 and older, 10 a.m.; Lunch Bunch today and every day Monday-Thursday through July 9, noon; The Bookies book club, discussing After I’m Gone by Laura Lippman, 1 p.m.; Children’s and Teen combined Game Time on this and every Thursday (except July 16 when the Babysitting Workshop will be in session), 2 p.m.; and lastly, a special appearance by Randy Roden and Mel Taylor with The Batmobile, 6 p.m. outdoors in the empty lot just north of the library. Come out and see this impressive vehicle, and learn how it was created. Take a photo or two. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket for sitting.

*Friday, July 10—Read-Aloud Time, 2 p.m. This is new effort to get adult volunteers reading aloud to children. We have free milk and cookies for this activity. Read-Aloud Time will be every Friday through the end of July.
