Female Scholars Examine Women’s Autobiographies In Fall Library Series

Books are now available for the Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma (LTAIO) fall series at McAlester Public Library. The theme, “The Journey Inward: Women’s Autobiographies,” will be covered by five presentations by female scholars from across the state, including two scholars from Southeast Oklahoma.

LTAIO is a community reading and discussion series from the Oklahoma Humanities Council, now in its 30th year. McAlester Library has been a participant in the program since its inception, and has one of the most active discussion groups in the state.

The schedule and presenters are:

*Thursday, Sept. 24—Dr. Trisha Yarbrough of Claremore will present “One Writer’s Beginnings” by Eudora Welty.

*Thursday, Oct. 8—McAlester Regional Health Center Foundation Director Stephanie Giacomo will present “Letters of a Woman Homesteader” by Elinore Pruitt Stewart.

*Thursday, Oct. 22—Dr. Sidney Watson of Oklahoma Baptist University will present “Dust Tracks on a Road” by Zora Neale Hurston.

*Thursday, Oct. 29—A special movie will highlight Hurston’s best-known novel, “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”

*Thursday, Nov. 5—Eastern Oklahoma State College professor Ruth Brelsford will present “My Life” by Isadora Duncan.

*Thursday, Nov. 12—A special film biography starring Vanessa Redgrave will tell Isadora Duncan’s story.

Books, services and other materials for this series are provided by LTAIO with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Funding for this series was provided by grants from the Inasmuch Foundation and the Kirkpatrick Family Fund. Local funding is provided by Friends of the Library of McAlester.

Each session begins at 6 p.m. in the library’s Whiteacre Room, and ends at 8 p.m. Following a scholarly presentation by each speaker, participants break for a light supper, followed by group book discussion. Door prizes are awarded at the close of each program.

Brochures with details about each book and author are available at the library. For more information about this or any other library program, call 918-426-0930, visit the library website at www.mcalesterlibrary.net or visit the library at 401 N. 2nd.

August Is Cool at the Library

By KATHY McGILBERRY

Things slow down a bit in August, but don’t let that stop you from coming to the library. We’re still the coolest place in town, with events and activities for everyone. Some of the staff will be taking some well-deserved vacation time this month, and others are busy making exciting plans for fall programs. In the meantime, here’s a quick look at what you’ll find—besides the best air conditioning in town—at the library.

Tonight, Monday, Aug. 3—Join us for Arthouse Theater at 6 p.m. as we watch the movie that won an Academy Award for the young actor portraying noted physicist Stephen Hawking. It’s a PG-13 rated biopic.

Tuesday, Aug. 4—Teen Lacqueristas and Lacqueristos, 2 p.m. Nail-polishing fun for teens. Please note there will be no Lap Sit or other children’s programs in August. Look for all children’s programming to resume in September.

Thursday, Aug. 6—The Bookies will meet at 1 p.m. to discuss Moloka’i by Alan Benett. Teen Game Time will be from 2-4 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 7—Teen Game and Craft Time, making friendship bracelets, from 2-4 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 8—Second Saturday Cinema, 2 p.m., featuring a PG-rated movie based on the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Monday, Aug. 10—Teen Craft Time, painting a wall in the teen room upstairs, 3:45-5:15 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 12—Adult Creative Crafts, 1:30 p.m., making Mason Jar candle holders. You must register in advance, because supplies are limited. Ellen Barlow will lead the group. Then at 6 p.m., join the Sci-Fi with Clout group as they discuss 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke.

Monday, Aug. 17—The Light Readers will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss Bridge to Haven by Francine Rivers.

Tuesday, Aug. 18—Teen Yu-Gi-Oh club will meet at 3:45 p.m. The Night Readers will meet at 6:30 p.m. to discuss The Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain.

Wednesday, Aug. 19—The Steampunk group will host a movie at 6 p.m. It’s the tale of an intergalactic treasure hunt for the greatest pirate trove in the universe, and it’s rated PG.

Thursday, Aug. 20—Teen Game Time, 3:45 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 22—Documentary Matinee, 2 p.m. Our featured movie looks at concert film from Elvis Presley.

Tuesday, Aug. 25—Socrates Café meets at 10 a.m. for philosophical discussion. Then at 3:45 p.m., Teen Cooking Class features Sirniki (Russian cottage cheese pancakes) and Honey Balsamic Chicken. At 6:30 p.m., the Learn to Crochet Club meets at 6 p.m. in the Conference Room with Lana Bowen.

Wednesday, Aug. 26—The Steampunk Book Group meets at 6 p.m. to discuss Camelot Burning by Kathryn Rose.

Thursday, Aug. 27—Teen Game Time, 3:45 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 28—Teen Game Time, 3:45 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 31—The Teen Advisory Group/Book Club will meet at 3:45 p.m. It’s a Reader’s Choice discussion. Then at 6 p.m., the Media Moguls Digital Photography Group will meet at 6 p.m. to work on their Photoshop Elements skills. Each participant will bring a digital photo to alter and improve.

Look for several big announcements in the coming weeks, as McAlester Public Library and the other branches of the Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma unveil their fall programming. Among the upcoming events are the annual CSI Genealogy Lock-In Saturday, Sept. 26; the fall Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma reading and discussion series; and a bonus book sale from the Friends of the Library.
