Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma Starts Thursday at McAlester Public Library

Library Discussion Series Celebrates Tribal Diversity and Sovereignty

This spring, McAlester Public Library is presenting a seven-part reading and discussion series that features contemporary fiction, nonfiction, and two films about Native American life, all of which bring the focus back to tribal sovereignty.

“Sovereign Worlds: Native Peoples Reclaim Their Lives and Heritage,” a series of five books that presents views on American Indian sovereignty, from the perspective of American Indian tribes and individuals, and illustrates the contributions made by American Indians to global culture, begins Feb. 23.

Books, services and other materials for this series of programs are provided by “Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma”, (LTAIO) a project of the Oklahoma Humanities, with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Funding for this series was provided by a grant from the Inasmuch Foundation. Local funding is provided by Friends of the Library.

“Living in a part of the country with so many tribal groups represented makes this series a valuable tool for examining the effect of loss of sovereignty in tribes and embracing the diversity in our Native community,” said Sarah Standish, Assistant Librarian. “Through reading and discussing these books, and watching the films in this series, participants may find they understand more about the people from these tribal groups and why they may seek sovereignty”.

Dr. Kenneth Hada, professor and poet from East Central University, will open the series at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 with remarks about Vine Deloria Jr’s “Custer Died for Your Sins.”

Each LTAIO session runs from 6-8 pm in the library’s Whiteacre Room. Free refreshments are provided and door prizes are awarded.

Other books, presenters and events in the series are:

*Thursday, March 2—A free screening of a movie (rated PG-13) with free popcorn, features Thomas and Victor, two young men who go on a journey together with the aid of figurative and literal SMOKE;

*Thursday, March 9—Stephanie Giacomo presents “After Columbus: The Smithsonian Chronicle of the North American Indians” by Herman J. Fiola, a nonfiction book which tackles the history of Native North Americans from the time after Columbus to contemporary times;

*Thursday, March 23—Dr. Paul Lehman presents “Indian Givers: How the Indians of the Americas Transformed the World” by Jack Weatherford, the nonfiction book which describes ways that Native peoples of the Americas have changed the world;

*Thursday, March 30— A free screening of a movie (rated R), with a lovable main character who makes his way along the POWWOW HIGHWAY, with free popcorn;

*Thursday, April 6—Dr. William Hagen presents “Love Medicine” by Louise Erdrich, a novel that shows the way that White civilization has encroached on the lives of two families on Chippewa land;

*Thursday, April 13—Dr. Ruth Brelsford presents “The Indian Lawyer” by James Welch, the tale of a young man’s struggle to be successful in life and also to retain the sovereignty of his Native soul.

Each program is opened by the guest speaker, who provides background on the authors, books and themes, followed by refreshments, then small group discussions. Participants may register and pick up books at McAlester Public Library, 401 N. 2nd, or call 426-0930 for more information.

The library is open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday 1:30-5 p.m.

Black History, Valentine Festival, Let’s Talk About It, Kids’ Programs–All in February

By SARAH STANDISH

February is Black History Month. Also, Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma is returning to the McAlester Public Library, and we started the month by celebrating the first of  two holidays with our patrons. On Feb. 4, it was Take Your Child to the Library Day, and on Valentine’s Day Feb. 14 we’ll have plenty of fun programs for you at our Valentine’s Festival.

There’ll be programs for people of all ages, starting with our first Spring Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma book discussion Feb. 23. And on Feb. 21, we will feature a talk by Primus Moore, a community leader who has been the only Black Vice Principal, then Principal, in the McAlester School system. He will tell us about himself and our community’s efforts to have L’Overture School preserved as a museum.

Also, for Black History Month, we’ll be celebrating one family’s folklore – the quilt codes that sparked a debate with historians in the early 2000’s. If you’d like to contribute to our “freedom quilt.” we’ve got quilt squares to be colored, available at the front desk. Our children’s movies and Saturday film choices were all picked with Black History Month in mind.

Looking for something to read that relates to Black History Month? So far, we have three displays in the library highlighting an aspect of Black History, from The Long Civil Rights Movement and The Black Experience in Oklahoma to Nonviolent Resistance.

Here’s a rundown of the rest of the month’s activities:
